If you were a film, which film would you be?
Dragon Ball Z.
As I see it, the series is a lot about living life with a purpose and staying loyal to your family and friends.
As a post-war child in Vietnam, my life mission is simple. Since I was a kid, I was always taught that I needed to work hard to get our family out of poverty and take care of my parents when they got older. Not once was I asked what I wanted to do with my life. I don’t know if it's a curse or a blessing, but I have seen many young people struggle because they couldn’t find a sense of purpose in their life.
When I was in my early 20s, I came across this book called “The Fountain Head” by Ayn Rand and it changed my life completely. It was the first time that I was seriously introduced to the concept of individualism, learning about the “I” and “integrity”. I started to question what I really wanted to do with my life and what kind of person I would become. The clash of world views resulted in many unhappy moments with my parents, for example, when I decided to leave a good corporate job to start a new career in marketing, which meant I would start everything all over again.
I’m a lot better now at juggling between the “I” and the “We”. I’m still loyal to my family and friends but I’m living my life instead of the life that my parents dream of.
